FIXTURES
Friday 17 December 2021
Saturday 18 December 2021

(%): National Average  E: Entries  R: Rides

FAVOURITES: The 5-year sample from Ascot is comparatively small so should be acknowledged. In this time frame favourites in handicaps fare poorly at 24% so way below the national average. Winning favourites in non-handicaps jumping obstacles score best showing 42-90 for 46.67% and a -5.83 loss to level stakes.

TRAINERS: Nicky Henderson and Paul Nicholls are easily the two top trainers at the course and both have great chances of a winner and if they do not there will be real disappointment. They have 11 runners between them, whilst Dan Skelton has 4 runners also. One imagines these trainers will dominate the meeting and the news!

JOCKEYS: The competent Fergus Gillard is now 0-71 and this losing run is much too long for him given he has a national average of 13%. Surely this run must end in 2021?. He has one ride tomorrow re The Domino Effect 12.35 in the Conditionals Race, it would have a chance, but for a 247 day absence. Jockey honours tomorrow must surely rest between Harry Cobden and Harry Skelton though we are so looking forward to the ride Aidan Coleman gives Johbon, thought he was superb last time out at Newbury in everything he did!

OWNERS: Our top 2 owners at the track could both have winners with their single entries. J P McManus has JONBON 2.20 (PACAFI) running for him, and Mrs Johnny De La Hey has PIC D'ORHY 2.55.

12.35THE DOMINO EFFECT (C Gordon) formerly with E Lavelle and 247 day break, Fergus Gillard 0-71 rides.
NORDANO (N King) weighted to win 128 > 122, only course winner in the field, Jack Andrews 4-17 for 24% (last 14 days)

1.10CITY CHIEF (N Henderson) €36,000 3yo, £210,000 4yo, formerly with D P Murphy, trainer has won 2 of the last 10 runnings.
SOLDIER OF DESTINY (J Snowden) formerly with M Quinlan.

1.45BRAVE SEASCA (V Williams) hot trainer 23%, 20% with chasers up to 2m3f, won this race last year.

2.20JONBON (N Henderson) Pacafi Status, Aidan Coleman rides and 43% on favourites, trainer has won the race 4 of the last 10 runnings, 2 of the last 4. With only two runs on the clock we thought the 5yo jumped beautifully at Newbury last time out, so much more to come…

2.55PIC D'ORHY (P Nicholls) top earner at the track today £290,176, hot trainer 26%. has won 3 of the last 10 runnings, Harry Cobden rides with 37% strike rate on chase favourites.

Mick Fitzgerald on Ascot

The fences on the far side are quite tricky, particularly for a novice, but, if you’re on a horse that can jump them and freewheel nicely on the downhill section, it can usually win for you. Handling those obstacles smoothly saves an awful lot of energy. It’s a front-runners’ track, too, especially in small fields of novices, but it’s very difficult to win from the front in a big-field handicap. Saving ground when you can and making sure you meet the fences right are the two biggest factors to keep in mind when you’re riding Ascot”.
