System 18 (AP-94-18-09-22-RC): Lay bet the runners from the Charlie and Mark Johnston yard on the betting exchanges when they are fitted with blinkers for the first time.
Results: Not masses of runners over the three months but a 100% lay strike rate would suggest that there may be an opportunity over 2023 to land a little extra in terms of profits.
Verdict: Added to the Approved category with a further review to be had at the end of March 2023.
Updates: 15th February 2023 – Given the hand over of the training licence from Mark Johnston to his son we may feel that we should look to put this back to review, however for the time being we will leave this in the Approved section and will review again as planned at the end of March. In an interview Mark Johnston “ explained he would be as committed as ever to Johnston Racing but felt under a joint licence his son was not getting the credit he deserved for the stable's successes… “Charlie’s had a sole licence since the beginning of last week,” said Mark Johnston. “It has just been coming. Nothing has really changed in terms of our roles. They will continue”.
2023: (Updated as of 13th March)
- Now as we enter into the Turf Flat season it will be interesting to see if this Johnson lay method can continue offering the profits previously seen. We will leave it in Approved for the time being and will review on a month by month basis.
