FAVOURITES: Winning favourites at Haydock over the past 5 years show 246-663 for 37.10% (-11.86). This is a good-sized sample and shows the racecourse winning favourites striking above the national average of around 32%. Best category for strike rate is 4yo+ in non-handicaps but from a small sample, they score 22-50 for 44% (+4.33).

Interesting that 3yo handicap favourites score 72-199 for 36% (+5.02) whilst 4yo+ favourites score 74-216 for 34% (+10.18) combining 146-415 for 35.18% and a level stake profit of +15.20. Conclusion, backing handicap favourites blind at Haydock produces a level stake profit.

TRAINERS: Our hot trainer list looks the natural starting point for tomorrow's racing at Haydock. William Haggas (22%) has been flying and this year he shows 52-175 for a huge 30%. The last 14 days he has scored 16-42 for 38% whilst May shows 22-64 for 34% and £756,708 in prizemoney and a level stake profit of +2.84. He has 4 entries tomorrow and another win double beckons. J & T Gosden (20%) are also in fine form and currently 12-38 for 32% in the last 14 days, they also look likely to score. The combined 7 runners will probably supply 3 winners.

COLD LIST TRAINERS: There are 5 decent trainers on the cold list with a losing aggregate of 0-132, with 7 runners between them will it become 0-139? This could be an angle; Scott Dixon strikes at 7% but the other four all strike at 10% or more. A big priced winner just might be lurking…

JOCKEYS: Richard Kingscote (14%) has 7 rides and James Doyle (20%) has 5 and the suggestion is both will ride a winner. Ben Curtis (16%), Dane O'Neill (15%) and Jim Crowley (19% will go close also!

COLD LIST JOCKEY: Richard Kingscote (14%) is top jockey at Haydock over the past 5 years and currently 0-17 over 7 days, tomorrow he has a ride in all 7 races and the suggestion is he will not be on the cold list come Sunday morning!

OWNERS: The runners of leading owners at individual racecourses are always worth a long look, and Shadwell Estate and King Power both run 2 horses tomorrow. The suggestion is they will have at least one winner between them.

Shadwell Estate (22%) have MAHRAJAAN 2.20 & LANEGASH 3.30 entered whilst King Power (15%) have HAPPY POWER 3.30 & WINDSEEKER 4.40 – a sporting Yankee?

Godolphin (24%) have a runner in VOLCANIC SKY 2.20 (Saeed bin Suroor).

Haydock is a lovely galloping track and on fast ground, despite the long straight, you can get away from your field and prove very hard to peg back. It’s completely different when conditions are softer, though, requiring more patient tactics. In distance races, there’s an advantage to be had in the back straight by switching sides as the course turns. There used to be a huge bias in favour of the stands’ rail in soft ground and, while it’s less pronounced these days, I’m still a believer in taking that route.Jason Weaver on Haydock Racecourse.
