CONFIGURATION: Kempton is a right-handed, Polytrack, flat, oval-shaped course with two loops. The inner circuit, used for races over 5f and 10f is sharp and has a finishing straight of just under 2f, favouring the speedy, handy type, markedly so over the minimum trip. The turn on the outer course is more sweeping and the straight is approximately 3f long, making for a fairer test. Over both 5f and 6f, there is a relatively short run to the first bend.

FAVOURITES: Kempton Racecourse Template offers us a huge sample giving the figures some real substance! Winning favourites at the course over the past 5-years show 635-1797 for 35.34% and a level stake loss of -195.81. Non-handicap winning favourites score at 43% as opposed to handicap favourites who score at 31% for a 12% differential.

BEST CATEGORY: 3yo NON-HANDICAPS 118-243 for 49% (-12.38)
WORST CATEGORY: 3yo HANDICAPS 126-417 for 30% (-56.83)

TRAINERS: Andrew Balding (15%) is top trainer at the course and has 2 runners including BELCAMO 5.45 & PAGE THREE 8.15 both to be ridden by David Probert.

JOCKEYS: There are 5 jockeys with 25 rides that need to be processed for win and place purposes. There must be multiple winners from this quintet! Hollie Doyle (15%) has 7 rides, David Probert (12%) has 7 also, Danny Muscutt (13%) has 5, Rossa Ryan (16%) has 4, and Joe Fanning (13%) makes the long trip down to ride 2 for Charlie Johnston. A par figure could be 4 winners from this grouping and a stack of places. Members are reminded of the figures of Hollie Doyle who has not fired since her return from Japan (7-79 for less than 9%) – bounce-back is imminent?

OWNERS: From our leader board only Opulence Thoroughbreds (18%) have a runner for this meeting in VOLKAN BEY 6.15 trained by Stuart Williams and ridden by Danny Muscutt. Despite a purchase price of €150,000 she has shown absolutely nothing after 3 runs and now races in the lowest grade class 6 handicap (0-55). At this stage we refuse to believe her runs reflect her ability, suffice it to say the market will be interesting. By the way, her 3 runs resulted in 9/9 at 66/1, 13/13 at 125/1 & 6/13 at 250/1.

The way the track is prepared at Kempton can play a massive part in whether it suits front-runners or horses coming from behind. Most of the time, the going is officially rated ‘standard’ but I know, from having ridden in America, that all artificial surfaces are dependent on weather conditions. An inside draw is a big advantage on the round course, as you don’t want to be running wide, and there’s a tendency for jockeys to get going a long from home. My preference would be to use patient tactics.
