COURSE: Action takes place on the Rowley Mile in April and May before the action switches to the July course in midsummer before returning to the Rowley Mile for the autumn.
The Cesarewitch course is two and a half miles in extent, and despite the run-in of ten furlongs, in big fields those drawn low are at a disadvantage. A wide, galloping track with an uphill finish that is ideal for the big, long-striding horse, except for the descent into the Dip where those types can become unbalanced.
Ability to see out the trip thoroughly is essential, and those that commit for home too early can be caught out by the uphill run to the line.
FAVOURITES: Winning favourites at Newmarket over the past 5-years show 210-622 for 33.76% and a level stake loss of -61.40 to SP.
The winning strike rate is only just above the national average despite the large amount of non-handicap races and the quality of horses racing here. One could easily expect the figure to be higher.
With one exception our top trainers struggle to match their personal national averages with their course strike rates.
TRAINERS: Our three best trainers are in action at Newmarket tomorrow. Charlie Appleby (29%) holds the highest national average in the UK, yet somehow manages to beat that figure at the headquarters of UK Racing with a strike rate of 31%. This figure despite multiple entries, big fields and poor draw positions. He sends 2 to the course today including HIDDEN STORY 2.15 & THEATRE HONOURS 4.00.
J & T Gosden (22%) are in great form and the team have 4 runners which include SAVANNA KING & VAGUELY ROYAL 2.15, HONITON 2.50, AUGUST 4.00.
William Haggas (23%) is a world-class trainer yet scores poorly at the headquarters of UK racing. His 25-210 for 12% (-61.37) is a big -11% below his national average, he runs 5 on Friday in SYLLABUS & DUBAWI WARRIOR 2.15, ZARAZA, STAR AHOY 4.00, and SHIGAR 4.35.
JOCKEYS: James Doyle (19%) has some good rides including those for Charlie Appleby, he has 6 rides including HIDDEN STORY 2.25, HONITON 2.50. PRINCE ALEX 3.25, THEATRE HONOURS 4.00, ASHKY 4.35 & RAVEN'S APPLAUSE 5.05.
Hollie Doyle (15%) rides at the course today and has 6 rides, they must be worth a look.
OWNERS: Godolphin (25%) have 3 runners including HIDDEN STORY 2.15, HONITON 2.50 & THEATRE HONOURS 4.00.

With the longest straight in Britain and just one turn to negotiate in distance races, this is a lovely course to ride. Surprisingly, though, there are one or two ridges, even before the run down into the Dip, and you need to ride them smoothly. The other thing a jockey has to remember is that it’s a long way up that finishing hill – you’ll see plenty caught in the closing stages. Because of the chalk base, it can ride very lively, and the wind direction is vital. Getting cover is so, so important when it’s in your face.
