More is less

That 66/1 selection I mentioned yesterday was a non runner. Smart Value Tips posted out some decent priced selections to Platinum members earlier, both have since been heavily bet! Platinum members can get those here  https://www.oncourseprofits.com/category/guest-tipster/

At the start of a new season, it’s always worth stepping back and asking a simple question:

Are you analysing races more effectively than you were last year?

One of the biggest mistakes most punters make isn’t a lack of information — it’s trying to use too much of it.

In a short guide I recently revisited, 5 Factors to Improve Your Horse Race Analysis, the key message is clear:
more data does not automatically lead to better decisions

In fact, research involving experienced horse-race handicappers showed something surprising:

  • Using 5 key factors produced almost the same strike rate as using 40+ variables

  • Confidence increased with more data — but accuracy did not

  • In some cases, performance actually got worse due to information overload

So what should you focus on?

The real edge for punters

Bookmakers must price up every race.
We don’t.

Our edge comes from selectivity — choosing when to bet and what really matters in that specific race.

Across both flat and jumps racing, a small group of factors repeatedly prove most influential, such as:

  • Recent form / last-time-out performance

  • Days since last run

  • Official rating

  • Age

  • One race-specific variable (e.g. draw, runs this season, or pace)

Beyond that, much of what we look at becomes noise rather than signal.

Race conditions still matter — but context is everything

Factors like going, distance, class, course configuration, trainer form and jockey confidence all play a role — but only when they are relevant to the race type in front of you.

The key takeaway is not to ignore these elements, but to avoid giving equal weight to everything.

Better analysis comes from prioritisation, not complexity.

Platinum members can to read the full breakdown and see how these principles apply across different race types, in the special report here

As always, the aim is not to bet more — but to bet better.
