Wind Ops

As with anything trainer related, some are better than others, and that appears to be true in terms of knowing when to perform a wind op – that can be linked to the processes they use to identify issues, the skills of their jockey/work riders, and no doubt their vets. Some trainers prefer to have their horses ready to roll after their op, no excuses, others less so – it can be best to catch them on the second run after a wind op for example – both because the horse may be fitter, and the horse itself knows it can now breathe.

Does Wind Surgery Help A Horse

The simple answer to that question is yes.

Basically the better an athlete can breath the better they can perform. I imagine that the reason some trainers do better than others with the first runs after a wind operation is two fold.

One they know which horses will genuinly benefit from the operation. I'm sure some trainers try a wind op in desperation because they have an underperforming animal and they are running out of ideas!

Secondly they put the work in with the horse before it returns to the racecourse to help it understand that it can breathe better so it uses that new capability.
