4.10pm Ascot - King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes
A Coronation Cup rematch is on the cards as Jan Brueghel and Calandagan lock horns once more. Personally, I cannot see Calandagan reversing the form. He was beaten fair and square at Epsom, and watching the race back again, Jan Brueghel is going away at the line. How he's not the clear favourite, I don't know.
Kalpana disappointed me at the Curragh last time. Even though she wasn't at her optimum distance, I thought she'd get the better of Whirl. But the manner in which she was beaten, outbattled and outstayed, concerned me. Even though you can't base her ability off just that run, facing the horses she does today is a different kettle of fish and despite her being back up in distance, I have my reservations.
Rebel's Romance has a remarkable 18 wins on his CV, including 7 Group 1s. However, not one of those top-level wins is in the UK or Ireland. Whilst he is a top horse, his ability just falls a little bit shy of the very top-notchers here. I imagine he'll run his race, but I would be surprised if that's enough.
Continuous is going to set the pace and Jan Brueghel is going to follow him; I can't see any other tactics being adopted from the Ballydoyle duo. Jan Brueghel has enough speed when he needs to, but he's also a thorough stayer, having won a St Leger. The fact that he has the best jockey in the world on his back is a bonus. I can see him taking it up on the turn for home and I don't see how they're going to pass him.
