Shergar Cup fancies
As it’s Shergar Cup I am not doing my usual ITV Saturday Preview. This week I am just looking at those races which interest me, writes John Burke to his Victor Value members…
Ascot
1:35 – Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Dash (Handicap) (Class 2) – 5f
Venture Capital a winner at Ripon in the spring from 1lb lower bounced back to form in the first time cheekpieces when a neck 2nd of 4 at Hamilton. Finished runner-up in last year’s race from a lower mark. If the headgear continues to have the desired effect he’s got a good chance from a handicapping perspective.
2:10 – Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Stayers (Handicap (Class 2) – 2m
Jessica Harrington is 3 from 5, 4 places with her runners at the Shergar Cup and she brings over just one this year in La Vita Nova. The filly was a disappointing 3rd of 5 at Down Royal last time but prior to that she had proved her stamina for two miles when 4th of 25 at the Curragh. The cheekpieces go on for the first time and I think she’s got a serious chance here with Hollie Doyle booked.
2:45 – Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Challenge (Handicap) (Class 2) – 1m 4f
I was on Insanity when he won this race 12 months ago. He was 5lb lower when winning 12 months ago but he did win at Ayr two starts back from 3lb lower. He disappointed at Newmarket when probably not staying 1m 6f last time. Can’t be discounted back over a C&D where his form figures are 21.
Dramatic Star beaten favourite in last season’s Melrose Handicap seemingly improved for a gelding operation when winning a Newcastle handicap last time. Capable of better as a 4-year-old and if William Haggas has him fit and ready for his return from a 291 day layoff, he’s the one to beat. Yard won this in 2022 with a 4-year-old.
3:20 – Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Sprint (Handicap) (Class 2) – 6f
Flash Harry an easy winner at Wolverhampton two starts back was beaten at 1/3 at Bath last time. Remains capable of better on handicap debut, after just three career starts. Trainer Clive Cox is deadly with his horses well fancied in the betting at the Shergar Cup – 5 winners from 10 runners (50%) +17.5, 7 placed – all returned 6/1 or shorter. If the money comes in for him its worth heading given those stats.
Prince Of India won valuable handicap (6f) at Newmarket’s July Festival. He’s clearly going the right way and even an 11lb hike in the weights might not hold him back the 3-year-old.
Zayer was a 4 ¼ length third to Prince Of India at Newmarket last time. He’s on the same mark as last time despite covering extra ground when switching from the nearside to almost the other side and becoming slightly unbalanced approaching the final furlong. Prior to that he had finished a good 4th of 20 in the Palace Of Holyroodhouse Handicap (5f) at the Royal Meeting. Not sure about stall 2 but he should give another good account of himself.
4:30 – Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Mile (Handicap) (Class 2) – 1m
Arisaig has been unlucky in the run on a couple occasions this season and did best of the hold-up horses when a 1¾ lengths 2nd of 12 to Classic at Sandown last time. A C&D winner her style of racing means she’ll need luck in the run but if she gets it there’s a race to be won with her off a mark of 98.
