Martin has four selections today, here is a taster of the Smart Value Tips service with the first to run and some additional pointers…
Tuesday Jan 20 14:20 Down Royal Creative Dancer 0.50 Points Win & Place (Betfair)
Going to concentrate on Down Royal for tomorrow's selections. Have three picks that all look excellent each way value. I will also include some other horses that have interesting stats. Not outright selections but may appeal if you want to be involved in those races.
First selection is Ian Donoghue's Creative Dancer in the 4yo+ Handicap Hurdle. Donoghue has a good record in this discipline:-
- Overall 5 year January record in 4yo+ H'cap Hurdles (1+ run in Hcaps and season: 13r 2w 3p (both wins this season)
- Down Royal Handicap Hurdle record : 12r 3w 6p
- Donoghue/Stone-Walsh record in Handicap Hurdles : 20r 8w 10p
The stable has been in decent form and at 16-1 offers each way value. Extra place advisable. Donoghue also has a runner with the same jockey in the Mares Handicap Hurdle. Taking a pass on that as his record in this discipline is quite poor.
OTHER TO CONSIDER
JEU DOPALE – 3.32 Leicester : Venetia Williams has a solid 5 year January record at Leicester; 13r 7w 9p. Including an impressive 5 r 3w 4p in Handicap Chases (2 Handicap Chase wins at this meeting last year). Would usually have been a strong daily selection, however the trainer is in really poor form; 34r 0w 6p in the last 30 days with the last winner coming on 15th December. Can't recommend but strong stats regardless.
WHERE'S FRANKIE – 3.50 Down Royal. Trainer Karl Thornton did us proud last week. And the winner from Fairyhouse, Shanroe Act along with Shanroe Nancy make their Handicap Chase debuts in the 3.20. I've not though seen enough statistical evidence from prior Handicap chasing debutants to put a case forward for either. Hopefully won't live to regret that in hindsight. But I try to maintain a statistical approach rather than having any real emotional attachment. Thornton though does have some interesting stats in the 3.50 Handicap Chase. A record of 7r 3w 4p with horses having 1+ run in H'cap Chases and the season. Includes a winner on this card last season with Don't Talk and Where's Frankie winning at Fairyhouse in 2024. Currently best priced 25-1 Where's Frankie may squeeze into a place, but I do have a stronger outright selection….
