Lockinge Stakes e/w bet

The Group 1 BoyleSports Lockinge Stakes (2.35) is the race of the week, writes John Burke to his Victor Value members.

It’s the first Group 1 contest for the older horses. Last year’s Irish 2,000 Guineas and St James's Palace Stakes winner Rosallion has his first start since winning the latter race at Royal Ascot. Other notable entries include last year’s 2,000 Guineas and Sussex Stakes winner Notable Speech and the race fit and improving Dancing Gemini and Group 1 winning filly Tamfana.

It’s set to be the race of the season so far and above average renewal of the race.

2:35 – BoyleSports Lockinge Stakes (Group 1) – 1m

Rosallion won the Irish 2,000 Guineas and St James's Palace Stakes last season and finished runner-up to Notable Speech in the 2,000 Guineas on his seasonal reappearance last year. Suited to quick ground and has obvious claims if ready after long layoff.

Notable Speech last year’s 2,000 Guineas and Sussex Stakes winner relishes quick ground and has a good turn of foot. If he’s at his very best on his seasonal return, he’ll be bang there.

Gemini Fire has race fitness on his side, and he’s looked an improved horse this season winning a Listed race at Doncaster on return and following up in the Group 2 Bet365 Mile at Sandown last time. Genuinely quick ground would ask another question of the 4-year-old, but he should be thereabouts. Ryan Moore takes over in the saddle.

Tamfana won the Group 1 Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket last October, ran a fine race behind a race fit Dancing Gemini last time and now gets 5lb. More ease would suit, but she can’t be totally ruled out.

Lead Artist probably needed the run when well behind Dancing Gemini at Sandown. A sound surface suits and he’s too big at 14/1 with Osin Murphy taking over in the saddle for a yard that one this last year and in 2021.
