The good ol’ days
Things aint what they used to be says everyone, probably, as they get older.
And nowhere is that truer than in the racecourse betting ring.

This morning I've been reading a review of Gary Wiltshire's new book over at Geegeez
I've not read the book myself but Tony Stafford gives a good account of a man that wasn't scared to play with huge amounts of money and who always paid out, eventually.
In my experience on course bookies are a an honest breed.
A long time ago I used to bet at Yarmouth dogs, my bet was £50 back when £50 was a lot of money, that statement is hilarious in the context of Gary Wiltshire but it was a decent bet and the mid week ring at Yarmouth dogs was not a place for 4 figure bets.
In those days there was no print out and bets from regulars were 'on the nod' and settled after the race win or lose.
One night I went to collect and was told I hadn't had a bet. Hmm what to do?
After a short discussion I stepped back and ruminated. A few minutes later I was called forward to be told they'd found my bet. I guess in the heat of the action they hadn't recorded a name against a bet and it was mine. Honest mistake.
You might find that Gary Wiltshire has better stories than that.
