2.57pm Wetherby – Charlie Hall Chase

Number 1 on the card is Djelo, who showed some potential for staying trips last season with wins in the Peterborough Chase and then the Denman Chase. I find it relatively easy to pick holes in those wins though, as he beat Protektorat at Huntingdon, whose form suggests he doesn’t really go right-handed. The Denman Chase win was against a relatively weak field in terms of their form at the time. He found Grade 1 company too hot at the end of last season.

Pic D’orhy steps up to 3 miles for the first time. I don’t think the way he races suggests he wants this distance. I’m personally not convinced by him as I think he generally picks off relatively weak races for the grade and this isn’t one of those.

Last years winner returns as The Real Whacker bids to retain his crown. He was very game, racing prominently throughout and fending off challenges in the straight. It’s a stronger renewal this time around and the remainder of his efforts last season don’t provide too much enthusiasm.

GA Law has seen a little bit of early market support but in truth he’s up against it. He’s a consistent performer in the top handicaps, but when he’s pitched into graded company he has tended to come up short and I don’t see why that would be any different today.

Hewick hasn’t won over fences since the 2023 King George, but he made a winning return to action over hurdles at Thurles last month. That showed his well being. He’s got his ground today and the long straight at Wetherby is going to suit his relentless galloping.

I think this looks like a perfect opportunity for Hewick, who has race-fitness over the majority of these rivals and has his ideal conditions.

[[EXCERPT_START]] So of course the problem with narrowing down a long list of selections is that you might throw out some winners. And that is what happened with our long list of heavy going selections yesterday. I passed on winners at 12.61, 8.24 and 2.1. But I would rather be more selective and bet at…

No winners on the Handicap Hurdle shortlist yesterday! Today I'll answer a few queries and questions. What about Course and Distance winners, we've had a few people ask about this as John's original outline included C&D's. Looking at the data back to 2014 if I add a filter to only include horses with a course…

We had a lot of interesting feedback in response to yesterday's mail and mixed opinions regarding the worth of betting at such short prices with a small ROI. The biggest concerns were around liquidity in the Betfair markets and there have certainly been some small volumes over the summer. Our hope is that, that won't…
