My cousins are called Ado (Adrian), Amo (Amy) and the one that makes me laugh is Pedo (Pete)
What I didn't know until they visited was that if you're at the races backing big-priced outsiders, you're backing Roughies. Pedo enlightened me to that.
It's so much better than "each-way outsider at double-figure odds."
So — are you a Roughies punter or a favourites punter?
Some punters hate backing short-priced horses — the returns feel barely worth the risk. Others won't touch anything above 5/1 — too many losers, too hard on the bank.
In this month's magazine Dave Renham shared some fascinating research on this very question — specifically, which jockeys deliver the best returns when their horses go off as fancied runners. The findings aren't what you'd expect. Some of the biggest names are surprisingly poor value when sent off short. Others are quietly exceptional.
