This morning I was looking through the free longest travellers list we share each day and I wondered are long travelling horses more profitable to follow at big festivals or less profitable?

My initial thought was that they would be less profitable.

My thinking was that a lot of owners would pay to send their horses to York this week just to run at the big event and the usual idea that a trainer found an easy race for their horse at York is frankly hilarious!

So I ran the numbers and here's what I found…

If you'd backed every horse that travelled over 200 miles to run at the York Dante meeting last year you would have had 54 bets and made a 21.23 points profit at Betfair SP which is a 39% ROI.

In 2024 it would have been a 5% ROI and in 2023 a 13% ROI.

If you only bet in non handicaps where the forecast price is 16/1 or shorter you get 88%, 59% and 35%.

The bad news is that, that profile was zero from 20 bets in 2022. I don't know if something was different that year, I can't remember anything?

2021 was a bumper year again with 322% ROI.

There are three non handicap races at York today and eight runners that fit that profile.

If you want to see today's longest travellers you can get the list here…
