CONFIGURATION: The Cesarewitch course is two and a half miles in extent, and despite the run-in of ten furlongs, in big fields those drawn low are at a disadvantage. A wide, galloping track with an uphill finish that is ideal for the big, long-striding horse, except for the descent into the Dip where those types can become unbalanced. Ability to see out the trip thoroughly is essential, and those that commit for home too early can be caught out by the uphill run to the line.

FAVOURITES: Winning favourites at Newmarket Rowley Course show 199-632 for 31.49% (-94.26) over the past 5-years, so figures below the national average despite staging more non-handicaps than handicaps. Best category for strike rate are 2yos in non-handicaps showing 56-159 for 35% (-21.91), whilst worst category are 2yos in handicaps scoring 3-25 for 12% (-19.62).

TRAINERS: Charlie Appleby (30%) continues to dominate proceedings at the Newmarket Racecourses. His national average is a big 29% yet somehow he manages to improve on his strike rate with 30% success at this course. He has 1 runner in CREATIVE STORY 2.53.

From our leader board we note Andrew Balding (15%) has 2 runners including T'CHALLA 2.53 & SPUN TO GOLD 3.23. William Haggas (22%) runs KILT 2.53 whilst J & T Gosden (21%) has 2 runners including LORD OF LOVE 2.53 & LAUTREC 3.23. All 5 have place chances at least and need to be processed.

JOCKEYS: With the top jockeys at York there are opportunities for others and Kevin Stott (15%) is in the best current 30-day form scoring 4-19 for 21%. He has 5 interesting rides including T'CHALLA 2.53, SPUN TO GOLD 3.23, CAMERA SHY 3.53, IRON LION 4.25 & DIVINE BREATH 4.55.

OWNERS: Leading owners at the course are a great sourse of winners. Godolphin (25%) have a single entry at a course they dominate scoring 104-387 27% (+79.78) so +2% above their national average over the past 5 years. In context, the next best owner at the course is Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum (21%) who has scored 16 winners! By the way, this owner has the following UK 2024 figures and worth noting, he is 21-66 for 32% (+44.93). Amongst those losers he has recorded 11 second places giving him a 1-2 placing of 32-66 for 48.48%. Godolphin run CREATIVE STORY 2.53 trained by Charlie Appleby and ridden by Callum Shepherd and a great chance of a winner!

Juddmonte (22%) also have a chance of a winner with LAUTREC 3.23 trained by J & T Gosden and ridden by Benoit De La Sayette.

His ride is closely related to unbeaten 6f/7f 2yo winner Quorto (inc Group 1 National Stakes; RPR 122); close second (clear with winner) in 1m novice stakes at Kempton in February 2024; ran with credit when close second to another progressive sort at Newmarket (7f) in April. Shepherd's numbers at Newmarket (Rowley) show 9-110 for 8% (+25.50) and at Newmarket (July) 13-105 for 12% (+26.96) so showing a profit at both courses.

Interesting that of all the jockeys riding at Newmarket tomorrow he has scored the most winners there over the past 5 years, he has 3 rides tomorrow.

Charlie Appleby has scored 26-87 for 30% (-1.22) so far this year, so yet again matching his national average of 29% – that said, he is 6-36 for 17% (-0.50) at Newmarket this year, which is measured against his course form of 94-318 for 30% (+55.55) over the past 5 years. Whilst accepting nothing is due in horse racing, it is reasonable to expect an upturn in strike rate at this course given his strong history and modus operandi!

With the longest straight in Britain and just one turn to negotiate in distance races, this is a lovely course to ride. Surprisingly, though, there are one or two ridges, even before the run down into the Dip, and you need to ride them smoothly. The other thing a jockey has to remember is that it’s a long way up that finishing hill – you’ll see plenty caught in the closing stages. Because of the chalk base, it can ride very lively, and the wind direction is vital. Getting cover is so, so important when it’s in your face.
