COURSE: The July Course is 2m1f in extent with a right-handed bend at halfway, the first mile being part of the Cesarewitch course, the last the straight Bunbury mile.
Notwithstanding the undulations for the first three quarters of a mile of the straight, the course then running downhill for a furlong before climbing to the line, it is galloping in character and favours big, long-striding sorts. As with the Rowley Mile course, ability to see out the trip thoroughly is essential.
FAVOURITES: This course is clearly favourite friendly and we have the receipts. Winning favourites at Newmarket (July) show 218-580 for 37.59% (-50.42) which is around 5% above the national average. Our composite shows 6 categories of winning favourites, where 3yo in non-handicaps perform best showing 27-60 for 45% (-5.60).
TRAINERS: William Haggas (22%) sits third on the leader board and is in the most wonderful form scoring 27-82 for 32.9% (+11.90) over the past 30 days. He has 2 runners here on Friday including BINTJEDDAH 1.35 & HALF MOON BAY 2.10 both to be ridden by Adam Farragher.
Another trainer in fine form is Ralph Beckett (18%) who sits number four, he shows 20-82 for 24.4% (-4.90) and has 2 entries also including VALIANT KNIGHT 2.10 & AULIS 4.30 both to be ridden by Richard Kingscote.
JOCKEYS: Richard Kingscote (13%) is on the cold list and currently 0-28 (10 days) and has 4 rides of interest at this meeting, they include VALIANT KNIGHT 2.10, RED MAIDS 2.45, PIECEDERESISTANCE 3.55 & AULIS 4.30
Sean D Bowen (11%) is 0-27 (26 days) and another jockey on the cold list and has just the one ride on a beaten favourite last time out TWILIGHT ZAZZ 2.45, who has a place chance at least.
Andrea Atzeni (15%) is of interest given he has just the 1 ride for Friday, but 6 for Saturday, he rides GRESSINGTON 3.20 for Ed Bethell tomorrow. His last UK winning ride was in August 2023 but has since had a successful stint abroad.
OWNERS: Of the top 5 owners at the course only Godolphin (25%) have entries tomorrow, they include the 3 runners trained by Charlie Appleby featured in our red flag segment.
RED FLAG: Charlie Appleby is currently having a moderate time of things if measured against his high standards and 29% national average.
Before we go to post he is showing 1-20 for 5% over the past 14 days (0-9 over the last 12 days) and this rarely happens to him. Widening the screen a little and in context, we note August shows 3-17 for 18% (-12.87), but July 14-38 for 37% (+16.08) so his current run is best explained as a blip! He has 3 runners at Newmarket including a Pacafi who was a beaten favourite last time out, they are MAGICAL TRAIL 1.35, AL MISBAR (bf) 2.10 & REGAL CONNECTION 4.30.
This represents a fantastic opportunity for jockey Dougie Costello (8%) who claims all 3 rides. There are no question marks regarding his ability so the low national average is best set aside on this occasion. When riding for Appleby this year he scores 3-13 for 23% (-2.42). Given the trainer's record at the course 66-202 for 33% (-5.92) we will be staking all 3 runners in some form. TRH says in some form, because included in those figures are 42 second places meaning 108-202 for 53.47% finish in the first two places bringing exotic bets into play.

With the longest straight in Britain and just one turn to negotiate in distance races, this is a lovely course to ride. Surprisingly, though, there are one or two ridges, even before the run down into the Dip, and you need to ride them smoothly. The other thing a jockey has to remember is that it’s a long way up that finishing hill – you’ll see plenty caught in the closing stages. Because of the chalk base, it can ride very lively, and the wind direction is vital. Getting cover is so, so important when it’s in your face.
