2:15 Ayr: Scottish Champion Hurdle
Ethical Diamond leads the Willie Mullins charge for a second UK Trainers Championship in succession, and he comes in here off the back of a respectable 4th in the County Hurdle last time. That was a good run, but he was running on past beaten horses around the home bend and by the time the line came, he wasn’t closing on those ahead of him. He also hadn’t shown a whole bunch over hurdles except for an odds-on maiden win, so I think he’s opposable here.
Kabral Du Mathan skipped the spring festivals to wait for this, and that could be a smart move from Paul Nicholls to have kept him fresh. He has been a progressive handicapper this season, winning first time out before a couple of seconds in competitive events. There is no sign of his improvement stopping yet, and he looks like the one they all have to beat.
The two mares could be interesting, but they both need a bounce back to form. Dysart Enos hasn’t hit the heights expected this season and has been underwhelming. Under Control was fancied for the Galway Hurdle back in August, where she ran ok, but the fact she was pulled up in the Greatwood Hurdle in November and hasn’t been seen since would have to be a bit of a concern.
Another that comes from the County Hurdle is Valgrand, who was fancied leading up to it. But since winning a Grade 2 in October, he has been a major disappointment in 3 handicap hurdles. One more to mention is Cracking Rhapsody, who was third in this last year and wasn’t far behind Ethical Diamond in the County Hurdle last time.
I think Kabral Du Mathan will take a lot of beating here. His progressive form coming into this sets him apart from the rest in my view and with Paul Nicholls finding some form the last couple of weeks with a 24% strike rate, he looks primed for this.
Win Bet: Kabral Du Mathan @ 11/4
Good luck with all your bets today.
All the best
