The Pep Talk – The St Leger

The Ante Post markets are quite at the time of writing so Alex is tipping up just the one runner this month for the St Leger.

St Leger

It would be fairly easy to make a case for quite a few of these near the top of the market.

When that’s the case, I will often leave it. For example, Savethelastdance clearly stays extremely well and you’d think she’ll thrive for the extra couple of furlongs following her last gasp win in the Irish Oaks.

Tower Of London probably should have won the Bahrain Trophy as he had to wait for a gap and then Ryan Moore dropped his whip – putting those two together probably cost him the race.

Desert Hero won the Gordon Stakes with a bit up his sleeve at Glorious Goodwood and the horse he beat, Chesspiece, is a solid yardstick.

However, what it boils down to here in my eyes is that Gregory is simply better than all of them.

He has the speed, stamina and attitude to take care of whatever his rivals can throw at him here.

When winning over this trip at Royal Ascot, he got a peach of a ride from Frankie Dettori, which obviously helped, but the horse had to have the ability in order to let Frankie dictate the race like he did. He was going away from Saint George again at the line. What is possibly even more noteworthy is that was just his third run too, so he’s only just getting the hang of racing.

In what will be Dettori’s last Classic, he’s got an almighty chance to go out on a high. 5/2 may not seem like a particularly enticing antepost price, but I’d say there’s a strong enough chance that he’ll run in the Great Voltigeur and if he wins that (which I think he would), then we’ll be looking at even money for the St Leger.
