Trained for the distance

He's a clever fella and sometimes it stretches my brain cells to follow along, but if you want angles to give you an edge, pay attention to Mr Magee.

This month he is looking at horses that are trained for a distance, read the column to understand why he's looking into this.
I need to take some time to learn how to interrogate the Betwise interface, something I haven't done yet, but here's some surprising facts I have found.
Over the last 10 years you could have backed all horses in non handicap 5 furlong races in lower class races who ran over the same distance last time for a level stakes profit.
I was expecting that higher class races would be the way, but I was wrong.
This is probably something to do with the age of the horses with the majority of 5 furlong non handicap races being 2 year old races.
In fact if you want an easy system thats made a 20% ROI at BSP over the last 10 years, you could just back 2 year olds in 5 furlong non handicap races who ran over 5 furlongs last time when today's race is a Class 5 or Class 6.
At 6 furlongs there's still twice as many 2 year olds as 3 year olds contesting non handicaps but the profit is in the Class 1 and Class 2 races.
And the 2 year olds with a 12% ROI.
At 7 furlongs Class 4 is where the profits at and again it's the 2 year olds with a 26% ROI.
At a mile it's Class 2 and the 2 year olds, but only a handful of races each year.
But, but, but these shorter races is not where horses have to be trained for the distance, especially not 2 year olds, we need to look at the longer races to see what we can find, I'll do that tomorrow.
