Value bet for the Eclipse

For today we asked Alex Peperell from Pep's Big Race Tips to help us with a bet in the Eclipse

3:35pm Sandown – Coral Eclipse

There is only one place to start and that’s with Ombudsman. He was sensational at Royal Ascot, finding trouble before powering clear in the final half furlong, superior by a long way. That was a huge performance and I do think he could well be a star, but he’s priced accordingly.

Three year olds tend to dominate this race due to how much weight they receive from their elders. Delacroix was sent off favourite for the Derby, but he failed to fire. He got shuffled back as he was caught wide early on and he never got into the race. I do think he’s still got loads of potential to pick up prizes, but he’s down into second favourite now and I think his price is right.

Ruling Court won the 2000 Guineas, which is top, top form with Field Of Gold looking imperious since. Charlie Appleby’s horses weren’t firing at Royal Ascot and given Ruling Court was always going to benefit from stepping up in trip, I wasn’t surprised he struggled for toe there. I think he’ll relish this trip and he has the form in the book.

Camille Pissarro and Hotazhell are both Group 1 winners, but it has to be a clue that Ryan Moore has chosen Delacroix over the former. I wouldn’t be convinced the latter will top the heights he hit as a juvenile and his pedigree doesn’t scream that he wants this distance.

Sosie completes the lineup and while he is a bonafide Group 1 horse, so are these rivals and he’s no Ombudsman. I don’t think the French form matches up to this field and he’ll find at least a couple too good.

I think Ruling Court is a great price here as I think he’ll benefit from this step up in trip and he has the form in the book. Back Ruling Court to win at 15/2.
