Win or Place? A Lesson from Matt’s Micro Systems

I’ve just been reviewing my bets for the month using Matt’s Micro Systems — and I realised something that made me wince a little…

If I’d backed all the selections to win and place instead of just to win, I’d have made considerably more profit.

Now, I’ve always believed that betting the place side reduces ROI — sure, it bumps up the strike rate, but at a cost, right? This month has me wondering if that’s actually true or if I’ve just been hanging on to an old belief from the days of standard each-way terms at the bookies.

Maybe it’s time to take another look.

Further research definitely needed.

(Side note: when I was a kid, I used to think it was called the boogies. I’ve got memories of sitting in the back seat with my sister while Dad was in the boogies — not quite as exciting as waiting outside the pub with a Coke and crisps for a couple of hours… now that was a treat!)

Anyway, back to today’s action…

Matt’s Micro Systems have eight selections lined up. I’ve got my eye on:

  • Rodeo in the 2:40
  • Wicked in the 6:05

…and I’ll also be backing a couple from the Approved Systems list — to win and place, of course!

If you want to see Matt’s thoughts for yourself:

Good luck with all your bets today.

All the best
