With the National Hunt season moving into the main section on proper autumn/winter ground, we will be focusing our efforts for this piece on a yard that will hopefully provide us with a steady flow of winners over the coming months.
Fergal O`Brien
Fergal O’Brien Racing is located in the heart of the Cotswold’s’ and the yard comprises of over 100 stables, both an uphill and a round gallop and an all-weather schooling strip. At the end of the 2023/24 season the yard surpassed over 100 winners for the 4th consecutive year and in doing so earned circa £1.2 million in prize money.
We will concentrate on the months of November through to the end of April, and on that basis if we consider the most recent 5-year period we find:
It should be noted that in October 2021 Fergal O’Brien entered into a partnership with fellow Gloucestershire trainer Graeme McPherson to form O'Brien McPherson Racing, with O'Brien concentrating on the training side of the operation and McPherson taking care of the business side.
This was dissolved in July 2023, and we feel that the renewed focus on the one training location has given fresh impetus to the overall set up.
Given the profit figures detailed above in the most recent two years of our stats this does seem to be borne out.
If we next consider the performance of the stable’s runners in handicap and non-handicap races we find quite a market difference.

Clearly, we need to focus our attention on the runners in handicap races.
