FAVOURITES

Winning favourites at Redcar over the past 5 years show 203-588 for 34.52% (-55.88) so above the national average. Albeit from a small sample, non-handicap 3yo winning favourites do best scoring at 38-76 for 50% (+0.32).

TRAINERS

Tim Easterby (10%) trains just 35 miles from the Redcar racecourse yet scores way below his national average.  He is neither punter friendly nor conducive to profit and we refuse to get involved with his shenanigans! We believe he uses his local course for schooling and work, his figures probably prove it showing a return of 146-1920 for 8% (-600.23).

His Redcar strike rate is 20% down on his national average and a huge drop relatively speaking! His current year figures at the course are 7-106 for less than 7%. For the record, another course he performs particularly badly is on the Newcastle AW which shows 26-434 for 6% (-183.38). Who would have a horse trained by him? On Friday he has 6 runners.

Richard Fahey (11%) is a neighbour of Easterby, and also a volume trainer with low strike rate. He scores 10% at the course so also below his national average and has 3 runners tomorrow.

Roger Varian (20%) continues in red-hot form and is currently 27-109 for 25% (+13.51), he has 2 runners in TAWAFAG 1.59 & PRAKASA 4.50, so both are worth a look.

Andrew Balding (15%) makes the 271-mile trip with 2 runners whilst H &R Charlton (18%) brings 1 runner a distance of 265-miles.

JOCKEYS

Dougie Costello (7%) is riding well and on a good run showing 8-38 for 21% (+48.50). Be assured he is not a 7% jockey and we have trusted him twice before with a Pacafi for 2-2. He rides MISS CALCULATION 4.19 who is drawn on the right side of the course with 20 runners competing.

Two jockeys in the doldrums are Trevor Whelan (8%) who is 43 rides without a winner and has just 1 ride, whilst Jason Watson (13%) is 30 without a winner and has 5 rides.

OWNERS

Cheveley Park Stud (17%) have 2 runners tomorrow in DAY MEMBER 1.25 & COMPLIANT 4.50

Obaid Al Maktoum (20%) also has 2 runners in QUINTUS ARRIUS 1.59 & PRAKASA 4.50

BY THE WAY: Members know we are not a fan of the Tim Easterby's of this world but take this opportunity to remind he is currently 99-1243 for 8% (-453.95) at Haydock so 1 away from 100. Tomorrow, he has 2 runners there including PREMIER OPTION 1.40 & SNASH 2.50.

BY THE WAY 2: Kevin Stott (14%) is riding better than ever these days and rides Redcar well, but it is significant he has 8 rides at Newcastle and could be the jockey to follow there. Stop at a winner?

BY THE WAY 3: We are not sure why the top trainers and owners do not target the course with horses running up to a mile, given that part of the course is perfectly flat and fair. The course drains well though we readily accept the bottom turn is a nightmare for races further than a mile (see racecourse map).

A few ridges have developed at Redcar over the years, and you definitely need to keep on the right side of those. The bottom turn is tricky to navigate too – there’s been more than one problem there – and the straight rides tremendously long. So, although its flat enough, races seem to change three or four times after the home turn. If you happen to be in front with one breathing down your neck, you have little chance of getting home, so patience is the key. Playing your cards late is the best option – Jason Weaver
