Research Corner – A Flying start to the New Flat Season?
Hi All. It is hard to envisage that at the time of writing, midway through the Cheltenham Festival, the new Flat Turf season is a few short weeks away with the traditional curtain raiser at Doncaster.
Although the Lincoln meeting takes place over the final weekend of March, the new Flat Turf season gets going in earnest in April.
To hopefully help us get off to a flying start to the new Flat Turf campaign we are going to be highlighting a number of trainers that have done well over the first couple of months, April and May, during the most recent 5 years.
After firing up our trusty friend, the system builder over at Horseracebase, we find that there were 7 yards that have recorded a winning Strike Rate over the research period that are currently still training. We used a minimum of 50 runners to hopefully provide a decent balance of activity and potential profits.
From the above we can see that a trio of the trainers achieved an A/E more than 1.00 which in essence means that their runners have outperformed the market expectation based on the returned starting prices.
Owen Burrows
Although he has had plenty of experience in the world of horse racing, he is a relatively new kid on the block to the training ranks having held a license since 2016.
He has made great strides since then with over 200 winners including a number of top-class races including Group 1’s.
The following is the trainer’s performance during April/May over the last 5 years.
The last couple of years have been trending upwards, which appears to be positive. Having reviewed the runners over this timeline there doesn’t appear to be any particular pattern as to the type of race, track or handicap/non-handicap except one standout fact.
Back the runners trained by Owen Burrows during the months of April and May that have a Betfair SP of 14.00 or less.
All the runners that went off at higher than 14.00 on the Betfair SP lost.
