Research Corner – A New Kid On The Block

Hi All

For this month’s piece we are going to be looking into a recent addition to the training ranks in the form of Newmarket based George Boughey.

George Boughey

George’s origins are from a farming family who were based near Dorchester in Dorset. Early in life her had the experience of being around horses and thoroughbreds, albeit his family’s racing roots revolved mainly around the National Hunt scene.

In his teenage and formative years George had already shown to have a very keen interest in horse racing and often would prefer to spend time studying the form book than putting his nose in any book which came as recommended reading in school.

A natural progression ensued and on finishing school George then went on to start work in the bloodstock business, initially for Luke Lillingston and then on to work for Tom Goff and Blandford Bloodstock both in the UK and over the water in the US.

A move to Australia followed his studies at Newcastle University in Agriculture and Business Management, and he worked for two of the biggest names in Australian racing, Gai Waterhouse in Sydney and Lloyd Williams in Melbourne.

Following those two stints he returned to the UK and took up a post with the Newmarket based trainer Hugo Palmer and spent six years as an assistant trainer, and for two of those he oversaw the running of Hugo Palmers satellite yard of 50 boxes, Yellowstone Park Stables, on the Hamilton Road.

1st July 2019 saw George granted a licence to train in Newmarket and, within less than two years, the runners he has sent to the track have won 51 races, coupled with a close to 20% Strike Rate.

Also, quite significantly and can be seen from the following table his runners are outperforming the market expectations (A/E value): –

Although the yard only managed a couple of winners in their opening season, they really clicked into gear during 2020 and that included missing a few months due to the Covid lockdown.

The Actual versus Expected figure during 2020 ranked at 1.14 which is quite an achievement over the course of a 12 month period.

At the time of writing George Boughey is already closing in on the 2020 tally and the winning strike rate has also leapt to above the 1 in 4 coupled with an A/E of 1.18.

Now at some stage, as with most things, there will be a correction as the punters and markets catch up, but hopefully in the meantime, and over the next few months he will provide us with some worthwhile gains.

A simple approach, to strike whilst the iron is hot, is to back the runners from the George Boughey yard for the rest of the current Flat season when running on Turf and the All Weather.

Of course, you can apply some sensible checks on form and fitness if you wish to take a more selective approach.

System 15 – Back George Boughey’s runners blindly until the end of 2021 Flat season when running on the Turf and the All Weather.

Stay safe and happy punting.
