Trainers – Ones to Watch

When you're following system-based selections, it's easy to spot the same familiar names cropping up time and again, but every now and then, it's worth casting the net a little wider, especially when there are fresh faces making waves on the circuit.

Here are two newer trainers that have caught our attention recently.

Gemma Tutty

Based in Osmotherley, North Yorkshire, Gemma Tutty took out her training license in 2022 after a successful spell in the saddle as a jockey. And she didn’t take long to make an impact. In her debut season, she notched up 16 winners—beating the previous best for her yard—and showcased the rise of the progressive Mostly Cloudy, who soared from a handicap mark of 60 to 98.

Operating out of Trenholme House Farm, her strike rate might not leap off the page at first glance. However, had you backed all her runners over the past three and a half years, you'd have emerged with a small but solid profit.

Where things get interesting is when we dig into the race types. Focusing on her runners in Claimers, Novices, Handicap Sellers, and Maidens, the return becomes far more appealing.

No, it’s not a fireworks display of winners just yet—but the trajectory is promising. Year-on-year strike rates show steady improvement, and since the start of 2024, she's really begun to come into her own. With 2025 already in the black, she’s definitely one to have on your radar.

Raphael Freire

Raphael Freire might be a new name to many, but he’s certainly not going under the radar for long. The young Brazilian was appointed in 2024 to take over the reins at the legendary Freemason Lodge Stables, formerly the base of Sir Michael Stoute—a big vote of confidence in his ability.

Now training high-profile horses for Amo Racing, Freire is already making moves. He’s been tasked with preparing Benevento for the Craven Stakes, a clear signal that he's trusted with serious talent.

With 2025 off to a strong start, we’ll be keeping a close eye on his progress in the months ahead.
