Unless you know where the edge is.
Martin, who runs Smart Value Tips, has spent the last couple of weeks going through five years of Goodwood data – 180 races, every major trainer, every race type. The result is a detailed research report that our members received this week.
Here are a few things he found.
A northern trainer with a 31.8% win strike rate at Goodwood. The highest of any trainer in the study with a meaningful sample. His sprint handicap record is even more striking – 43.8% from 16 runners at five and six furlongs.
The market does not price him as a 31.8% trainer at Goodwood. His horses go off at prices that reflect his national profile – decent, but not spectacular. The gap between what the market thinks he is and what he actually is at this course is where the profit lives.
A trainer whose runners in Goodwood Group races win at 44.4%. That is 8 winners from 18 runners in the most competitive races at the meeting – nearly one in two. His partnership with a jockey who rode his first winner here and knows every inch of the track has produced a 50% win rate together at the festival (4 from 8). When this trainer targets a Goodwood Group race, you take notice.
And here is one to file away. A northern handler who rarely makes the trip south. When he does send a horse to Goodwood for a Class 2 handicap, he wins 50% of the time – 4 from 8. A horse from that yard appearing in next week’s racecard deserves far more respect than the market is likely to give it.
The report also identifies trainers to oppose – including one with a big local reputation and 59 runners at the meeting over five years, who wins just 3% of them. Martin’s view is that those horses are consistently overbet given their actual record.
The full report – with all the names, the numbers, and the angles to follow and oppose – is sitting in the Smart Value Tips member area right now, waiting for anyone who joins.
