Research Corner – Early Season National Hunt Snippets
Hi all, last time we covered the final two months of the turf season, namely October and November.
This time around we will move on to the National Hunt scene.
Although there is jump racing all year round these days, for true jumps fans the “real” season gets underway during October and features the first fixture of the 2026/7 at Prestbury Park with the William Hill Showcase.
Cheltenham is considered the home of jumps racing and will place host to top quality racing over Friday 24th and Saturday 25th October.
We will be delving into the historical statistics over the most recent 5 years and where better to carry out this task than by turning to our trusty friend, the system builder over at www.horseracebase.com
The base line will be a winning strike of 20% or better over the 5-year period during October and November along with a minimum of 50 runners to hopefully provide a decent balance of activity and potential profits. We will also focus our efforts on GB racing.

If we start with the yard that has achieved the highest ROI% over the review period and see if a little digging can find a nugget or two.
Nicky Richards
A decent return was made in 4 of the last 5 campaigns during October and November, however last year returned a loss and there was a slightly worrying trend with the strike rate. After checking the usual parameters such as race type there was one angle that appeared to be productive in all of the last 5 years, namely a trio of racecourses.

Next up based on ROI% is
Venetia Williams
Overall, a decent picture, but a couple of losing years including last time around.
Venetia Williams has built her career off the back of Chasers and if we focus on those runners during the review period it does improve the situation.
Given the recovery after the 2022 period, it is not too much of a stretch to hope that history repeats itself and 2026 bounces back.
