Trainer Focus: The One-Runner Angle (Early Flat Season)
For this month’s article I want to explore a statistical angle that has always intrigued me when analysing race data.
The focus will be on the early part of the Flat season, specifically the first three months from March through to the end of May, and asking a simple question:
How effective are trainers when they send out only one runner on the day?
Over the last five seasons there have been 5,995 Flat races run during this period. Of those races, 5,129 (85%) contained at least one trainer who had only a single runner declared on the card that day.
What is particularly interesting is how often those runners actually win. From the 5,129 races that contained a trainer with a sole representative, 1,429 races (27%) were won by that trainer’s single runner of the day.
While the majority of runners in any race will naturally come from stables with multiple representatives across the day’s meetings, this data suggests that trainers targeting races with a lone runner may be a far more influential factor than many punters realise.
In the remainder of this article I will explore the angle further, examining a “hot list” of ten trainers who have shown particular strength when sending out just one runner on the day during the early Flat months. Looking more closely at which racecourses these trainers have had the most success at, and whether there are particular jockey partnerships that consistently deliver results when this angle occurs.
Equally important is the opposite side of the equation. Alongside the hot list I will also highlight an extensive “cold list” of trainers whose records in this scenario are notably poor, helping to identify situations where punters might wish to oppose runners.
