Ascot Racecourse

Founded in 1711 by Queen Anne who, when out galloping found an ideal place for horses to gallop and it’s fair to say they’ve been galloping theirthere ever since. Ascot Racecourse has a rich history of top quality racing.  No fewer than 54 Class 1 races, from Listed to Group 1, were held there last season alone.

The pinnacle is of course the Royal Ascot festival. In excess of a quarter of a million racegoers are welcomed across the five days. Sixty thousand alone attend Gold Cup Day.

Over 10 million pounds of prize money is on offer, with 8 Group 1 races and 19 Group races in total.  As would be expected, all the big name trainers will be there battling over those coveted wins.

The course is right-handed and one circuit is slightly in excess of 1 mile 6 furlongs. It’s famed for being a tough course, particularly over fences with a 73 foot climb from the lowest point to the winning line.

1965 saw the introduction of National Hunt racing to the course.

The quality racing continues there as well with 14 of those aforementioned 54 Class 1 races from last year taking place in National Hunt races.

With this article coming out in time for June, it would be remiss to not start with a look at the Royal Ascot meeting in a little more depth.

We’ll start by taking a look at the trainer records over the past five Royal Ascot meetings.

The table below shows all trainers who have saddled at least two winners and they are ordered by number of wins.

I’ve highlighted two trainers that might go under the radar here that immediately stood out to me and they are Harry Eustace and Gavin Cromwell.  While they haven’t had a lot of runners, they have picked up six winners in their combined nineteen runners.

There are also quite a few trainers, away from the predictable big guns that most might concentrate on, that have picked up some very nice place totals and indeed wins as well.

With that in mind let’s see if there is anything we can put together with a selection of those trainers, namely, Eustace, Walker, Ryan, Suroor, Cromwell and Evans.

If we take those, remove any runners who have forecast odds of 50/1 or above, remove any horses who are older than 6 and concentrate only on the races where the winning prize is £40,000 or higher then we have ourselves a little system that across the last five years has profited each year on both the win and place market.

The highest number of bets has been 22 across the five days of the festival so it’s a nice size which should generate roughly four to five bets per day on average.

Combined results for Eustace, Walker, Ryan, Suroor, Cromwell and Evans.

Keeping on the Festival theme we’ll take a look at the King George Meeting that is held in July now.

Again, we’ll start with a look at the top winning trainers.

The table below shows all those with at least two wins during the last five King George’s.

Best performing trainers in the King George.

Charlie Appleby has an incredible strike rate here but as we can see from the profit, it’s mostly from fancied horses, but that said, they are doing what they are expected to do which is all we can hope for.

Ed Walker is also one whose horses will be well worth a closer look.

Again, a little further down the list there are some interesting profits and performances on both win and place.

Let’s see if we can find a similar little system using those trainers.
