Research Corner – End of Season Snippets
Hi all, last time around we highlighted a trio of micro methods that looked worthy of following during the late summer months of August and September on the flat turf.
This time around we have moved the calendar on to the final stages of the turf season, namely October and November. Traditionally the curtain falls with the Doncaster November Handicap which this year is on Saturday 7th.
We will be delving into the historical statistics over the most recent 5 years and where better to carry out this task than by turning to our trusty friend, the system builder over at www.horseracebase.com
The base line will be a winning strike of 20% or better over the 5-year period during October and November along with a minimum of 50 runners to hopefully provide a decent balance of activity and potential profits.
There are a very select group of 3 trainers that meet the above criteria which are shown in the following table.

All three of the above yards have achieved a very positive A/E over the latest 5 year period during October and November.
How did they fare when we take a closer look at the individual years?
Charlie Appleby

Apart from 2024, which produced a tiny loss of -1.71pts, the other 4 years were positive. With that in mind it seems worthy of a punt that 2026 may follow suit.

Back the runners trained by Charlie Appleby when they run on the flat turf during the months of October and November.
Moving on to John Ryan we see that the yard only just made the 50+ runner threshold from the latest 5-year period.
On closer inspection the bulk of the profit came during the 2024 late season campaign and collectively the other 4 seasons just about broke even.
With that in mind it seems a sensible call to pass this time around.
That leaves us with William Haggas, and the year-by-year figures for the months of October and November are pretty impressive!

Here are the horseracebases settings:

So as the curtain falls on the 2026 Flat Turf season it would appear a wise move to be backing the runners that Charlie Appleby and William Haggas send out in the months of October and November.
