Trainers Who Excel in 3yo Handicaps on Turf
Some trainers are substantially more capable at successfully placing their young un-exposed Handicappers than most of their counterparts, especially when it comes to races restricted to three-year-olds.
These types of contests are generally packed full of lightly raced individuals, a percentage of them often having previously been run under conditions that won’t have allowed them to show their best form, picking up a favourable handicap mark in the process that their shrewd trainers will then look to exploit once they switch the horses focus to the world of handicaps, in many cases handicaps will have been the plan long before the horse in question ever set foot on a racetrack for their debut run.
As always, these opportunities need to be exploited by us punters. If there is an accessible edge that we can uncover, then we need to be all over it and stuffing our betting banks with the profits.
What follows in this report are five trainers that the stats are telling us are masters at finding winning (and profitable) openings for the un-exposed three-year-old handicappers within their ranks, specifically those three-year-olds that are kept within their own age group (handicaps restricted to three-year-olds).
I’m keeping things relatively recent in this report and only using data from between the years of 2018 to the present day (so the last six full seasons as well as the start of this current season, bearing in mind that the 2020 season was Covid interrupted).
Training methods and mindsets can and do change over time, so I feel it’s best to keep things as recent as possible with these approaches, whilst at the same time giving enough of a data-set to work with and draw accurate conclusions from.
I’ll start with the trainer who is perhaps the ‘master’ at getting his younger horses handicapped and then finding the ideal spots to start off his unexposed handicappers, often managing to get a sequence of wins into his youngsters before the handicapper catches up with them and manages to anchor them on a stopping mark...
Sir Mark Prescott
Overall record since 2018 in Handicaps restricted to three-year-olds (Turf only)
50/157 | 32% S/R | +£35.05 BFLSP – W&P 81/157 | 52% S/R
15% above market expectation
So, even on the bare figures Prescott has pulled in some tasty enough profits in handicaps restricted to three-year-olds. It hasn’t been profitable every year but the two years where profits were not returned only just dipped into the negative (-0.57 in 2021 and -1.36 in 2019).
With a couple of simple filters, we can improve on the bare figures considerably and also turn every year into a profitable one...
First up I want to drop any of the Mark Prescott horses running in handicaps ABOVE Class 4 level. This makes perfect sense as Prescott never has all that many top-level operators in his yard in any given season and he does prefer to ply his trade at the lower levels, out of sight of the wider betting public. Adding in a ‘Class 4 level or below’ filter improves the figures to...
48/122 | 39% S/R | +£63.74 BFLSP – W&P 71/122 | 58% S/R
27% above market expectation
I also want to concentrate on the period of May, June and July only. This three-month period is where the bulk of the Mark Prescott winners come in three-year-old handicaps and this filter not only boosts the strike-rates and the profit figures, but it also gives a healthy shot to the ‘above expectation’ figure...
43/97 | 44% S/R | +£72.81 BFLSP – W&P 59/97 | 61% S/R
43% above market expectation
The final nut I want to tighten up comes on the male/female side of things. The mare ALPINISTA may be the best horse Mark Prescott has ever trained, but when it comes to this particular section of his string it very much pays to concentrate on his colts and geldings. If we add a final filter that only looks at his male horses in three-year-old handicaps we are left with the following angle...

System: JO-115-50-06-24 - Sir Mark Prescott | Turf Handicaps restricted to three-year-olds | Class 4, Class 5 & Class 6 level only | May, June & July | Colts & Geldings
Editor’s note: For May 2024 to date at the time of writing there has been just 1 runner so we have not missed anything with this and 75% of the runners have been during the months of June and July.
Next on the list is a classic winning trainer who pulls in some tasty profits in handicaps restricted to three-year-old...
Andrew Balding
Overall record since 2018 in Handicaps restricted to three-year-olds (Turf only)
98/589 | 17% S/R | +£172.71 BFLSP – W&P 232/589 | 39% S/R
1% below market expectation
Andrew Balding is another trainer who even on the bare figures has pulled in some juicy profits in handicaps restricted to three-year-olds.
Similar to Prescott it hasn’t been profitable every single year in the data-set, but that can easily be flipped around once we start to apply a couple of simple filters.
The first filter I want to use to start building a robust angle with is the ‘runs in season’ filter. Backing the Andrew Balding three-year-olds that were making their seasonal debut would have seen us drop around 35 points and it’s beneficial (for the betting bank) to let these types run without backing them.
There is also a limit at the other end of the scale and ideally, we don’t want to be backing the Balding three-year-olds that had more than six runs in the current season, and I’m happy to ignore those with more than six seasonal starts as well. Adding in a ‘1-6 starts in current season’ filter improves the Andrew Balding figures to...
87/479 | 18% S/R | +£222.16 BFLSP – W&P 204/479 | 43% S/R
6% above market expectation
I also want to ignore the Balding runners that are moving down in trip more than 0.5 furlongs from their last start. They are another bunch that dig into the profits and it’s best to let them run without our money down. Ignoring those types moving down in trip more than 0.5 furlongs improves the figures to...
81/431 | 20% S/R | +£237.30 BFLSP – W&P 181/431 | 44% S/R
12% above market expectation
Finally, I want to apply a month filter to the data-set as Balding three-year-olds in three-year-old only handicaps are very much at their strongest in the months of June, July, August and September... which gives us a final Andrew Balding angle of...
Andrew Balding | Turf Handicaps restricted to three-year-olds | 1-6 starts in the current season | down no more than 0.5f on their last start (same or up in trip is OK) | June, July August & September only.
63/286 | 22% S/R | +£254.54 BFLSP – W&P 125/286 | 44% S/R
27% above market expectation – Profitable every year under analysis (2018 to present).

System: JO-115-51-06-24 - Andrew Balding | Turf Handicaps restricted to three-year-olds | 1-6 starts in the current season | down no more than 0.5f on their last start (same or up in trip is OK) | June, July August & September only.
