Research Corner – Jump Trainers to Follow Early in the Year – Part 2

In last month’s Research Corner, we highlight a few Jumps Trainers for you that have performed well at the start of the year, during the months of January and February.

That piece was based on Chasers, so for the follow up we will switch our tack to the Hurdlers.

To keep things relevant, we are going to use the most recent 5-year period, 2021-2025, for the basis of our research.

The other factor to consider is quite often trainers have their own individual style such as concentrating on chasers or maybe ex flat runners over hurdles etc.

The following Table shows the performance of NH trainers that have had 75 or more Hurdlers run over the latest 5-year period and have achieved an A/E in excess of 1.00, which indicates that their results have exceeded the market expectation based on the returned starting price.

Trainer breakdown

Next, focussing on the yards that also made a decent profit to BFSP, we will take each trainer in turn and see if we can uncover a few gems that might be worth following at the start of the New Year.

Chris Gordon

Yearly breakdown.

The overall picture looks promising, however on closer inspection we find that there is a downward trend in the P&L, with last year making a hefty loss.

The A/E remains encouraging but hopefully we will find a few other nuggets that offer more scope for profit.

Mark Walford

Yearly breakdown.

Looking at the above we can see that 3 of the 5 latest years over the review period have been profitable, which is encouraging especially as that includes the most recent couple of years.

Laura Morgan

Yearly breakdown.

The above doesn’t seem to offer much encouragement with the bulk of the profit coming last year from a duo of winners. Moving on.
