Summer Jumping (had me a blast…)

Apologies for the cheesy song reference in the title... but it’s true, a blast can be had over the sticks during the summer months... and by a blast I mean a profitable time...

The jumping game does, naturally, take a bit of a back seat once the Punchestown Festival is done and dusted, but it doesn’t stop, far from it, it keeps on keeping on... and for all it probably should have a bit of a longer break than it does, the facts are that there are a plethora of National Hunt fixtures to get stuck into during the summer months , which as a result offers plenty betting opportunities for the shrewd punter to plunder and top up the betting bank, in preparation for the proper jumping stuff that rolls back around in the autumn...

As is often the case, one of my favoured methods is trainer angles, and there is no shortage of angles to consider over the summer months, with plenty of trainers showing some solid (and profitable) figures in the months of May, June, July, August, and September...

Let’s get started...

*Stats are taken from summer 2018 to summer 2023

Willie Mullins

It seems like I always start these types of posts with a Willie Mullins angle!! But no point in hiding from the facts... he’s by far and away the best National Hunt trainer currently around and he keeps his string in bouncing form for 12-months of the year, year upon year...

The following is one of the strongest angles I found for his summer jumpers...

Willie Mullins system rules

134/428 | 31% S/R | +£162.53 BFLSP – W&P 219/428 | 51% S/R (10% above expectation)

The profits come by avoiding the horses ridden by the main Willie Mullins jockey(s), horses that are likely to attract the most money from the wider betting public and as a result have a greater chance of going off at a shorter odds than they really should, hence the reason why Ruby Walsh has been included in the data set above, despite the fact he is now retired (he wasn’t retired for a couple of the years under review)...

Fergal O’Brien

The Fergal O’Brien team are another lot who keep churning out a healthy number of winners each year and they are more than capable of keeping their string in top form through the summer months... for this angle I’ve only gone back to 2019 as the stats suggest that’s when things really started to click for them...

120/461 | 26% S/R | +£338.04 BFLSP – W&P 227/461 | 49% S/R (11% above expectation)

Fergal O Brien system rules

*The yards that fall within this distance of the Fergal O’Brien yard are...

Bangor, Fontwell, Huntingdon, Kempton, Ludlow, Southwell, Stratford, Uttoxeter, Warwick and Worcester.
